What makes criminal investigation documentaries so interesting?

I've been hooked onto criminal investigation documentaries for a while now.

Homicide investigations shouldn't be so interesting to watch. The narrative is eery, visuals are graphic, and it leaves us with a feeling of pity and jarring thoughts.

I guess violence triggers the basic survival instincts in us and we literally experience a heightened sense of living and so this kind of programming "moves us"

Watching "Catching Killers" on Netflix now
